Doug Hoffman founded NORMI in 2004, after more than 40 years in the construction industry specializing in building science and indoor air quality. What began as a response to Louisiana's first mold-licensing law has grown into a national certifying body offering 14 certifications for indoor air quality and mold professionals, with training recognized in Texas, Florida, Louisiana, New York, and Washington, D.C.
Hoffman authored Mold-Free Construction and has continued expanding NORMI's mission beyond mold to the broader indoor environment — including a Medical Advisory Board, chaired by Dr. Andrew Heyman, that connects remediation practices to medical care so patients aren't treated for illness while still living in the environment that caused it.
In this episode, Hoffman walks through an on-site remediation case to show how a mold source gets traced and contained, and explains how spores travel through a home via the air — which is why remediation has to treat the whole house, not just the affected room.
"Most of the problems that people have have very little to do with what's going on outside — people think it's weather-related, a hurricane, a flood. But the reality is it's oftentimes the way we build... and that's the real secret to finding where the mold is: finding out where the moisture is."
