Cambria Judd, MD

Founder, Beyond Functional Medicine

Cambria Judd, MD graduated from the University of Utah School of Medicine and trained in family medicine at St. Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City before completing a sports medicine fellowship at UC San Diego. She later earned functional medicine certification through the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, combining her training in primary care, sports medicine, and functional medicine to identify the root causes of patients' dysfunction.

Dr. Judd has worked with Division I college athletic teams and Olympic athletes at the Chula Vista Olympic Training Center, with particular experience in concussion care, including screening work with the NFL Trust for retired players. She is board certified in both family medicine and sports medicine.

In this episode, Dr. Judd walks through a patient case — a man struggling with insomnia and anxiety after a divorce — and explains the connection between chronic stress, cortisol, and inflammation, and why she chose vagus nerve stimulation over medication.

"Stress and anxiety absolutely leads to inflammation. Cortisol is our stress hormone. It's that fight, flight, freeze, hide — we should only be in that state in an acute crisis, like running out of a burning building. When you're constantly pushing cortisol because you're stressed, you start living in a state of constant inflammation."
