Amy B. Lewis, MD graduated summa cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania and earned her medical degree with highest honors from Yale School of Medicine. After completing her dermatology residency at SUNY Downstate, where she served as chief resident, she returned to Yale for a fellowship in dermatological laser and reconstructive surgery.
In 2005, Dr. Lewis founded the Yale Cosmetic Dermatology Division within the university's Dermatologic Surgery Department, where she remains a Clinical Assistant Professor. She built a premier private practice in Manhattan, Lewis Dermatology & Associates, specializing in cosmetic and laser dermatology and is frequently featured as a media expert on dermatology and hair loss.
Dr. Lewis explains the science of hair loss and regrowth — from the hair follicle as a living organ to the multi-modal treatments she uses in her own practice — while also speaking to the emotional weight patients carry around hair and identity.
"The hair follicle, which is underneath the scalp, is the actual organ of the scalp that causes the hair. It relies on blood supply, nutrients, and it's a viable structure. When the hair shaft comes out from the hair follicle, this part of the hair is actually dead. It's not a living structure. So that's why it's so important that we are healthy for the entire scalp."
